A Freediving World Record From Turkey

Turkey is having very diffucult days due to the violance made by the police to the Turkish public. But  there was a world record attempt on previous sunday, away from the protests in Istanbul.

Lake Van

Van is a city in Turkey, located in far east of the country. Lake Van is the largest lake in Turkey (12.500 km2) and it is a saline soda lake. Van is surrounded by high mountains and the Lake Van is feeding from waters of these mountains.

Who Is Şahika Ercümen?

Şahika Ercümen is a Turkish sportswoman. Her major is freediving although she graduated from Başkent University, Ankara, Dietetics department.

She is also an underwater hockey player and she became a champion with the underwater hockey team in 2006.

Şahika has become a role model in freediving not only in Turkey but also on the globe. She is a freediving instructor and raising her own freediving students.

I like the way Şahika holds her monofins (you can see monofin in the photo) and tumble underwater.

Şahika Ercümen was born in Çanakkale (Dardanelle) in 1985 and met with the seas when she was a child. Her allergic asthma couldn’t stop her sea love, even made her better. Watch the video below to hear this story from Şahika Ercümen’s mother.
